Plumerias
15244 sq. ft. | Kochi | Kerala
‘Plumerias’ is a personal and deeply thought-out architectural endeavor by architect Sebastian Jose. Situated on a linear plot facing the backwaters of Kochi (Vembanad Lake), the residence seamlessly blends with its natural surroundings, preserving existing trees and enhancing views of the water.
Designed as a floating pavilion, the home maintains a light footprint, elevating the structure to maximize airflow and minimize environmental impact. The entrance is a gradual experience, guiding visitors through a narrow space before opening into a voluminous living area. The residence is structured through split levels, creating a natural flow while maintaining an illusion of being at ground level. The 20-meter-long concealed-frame perimeter window enhances the connection between indoors and outdoors, extending the visual experience towards the water.
A key element is the centrally placed water court, featuring three plumeria trees, from which the home derives its name. The residence also integrates passive cooling strategies, including cross-ventilation, green roofs, deep overhangs, and insulated terracotta bricks to adapt to Kerala’s tropical climate. The home embodies sustainability, thoughtful spatial planning, and a deep connection to nature, offering a tranquil yet functional urban retreat.
