RETAINING THE UNBUILT
At the core of the concept of Raga Svara lies the idea of celebrating what already exists. This principle serves as a guiding force for the design of this Indian-oriented wellness centre that values primitive architecture and organic planning. By incorporating these principles into the design, the centre aims to create a space that honours the natural environment and allows visitors to reconnect with their inner selves. With a focus on simplicity, authenticity, and mindfulness, the centre offers a unique and holistic approach to wellness that celebrates the beauty of the present moment.
The site for this wellness centre had humble beginnings as a family farm, which was characterised by a collection of mature trees that dotted the landscape. In order to begin the design process, a thorough survey of these trees was conducted, with their precise locations being meticulously mapped out. Using this information, architects Ramya Raman, Santhosh S and Raja Krishnan, were able to use the existing trees as a key guiding principle for zoning the various areas of the site. The reception and the amenity centre have been situated towards the front and centre of the property, while the treatment centre and residential blocks have been tucked away towards the back, providing a sense of privacy and seclusion. By carefully considering the natural elements of the site and incorporating them into the overall design, the resulting space feels harmonious with its surroundings and provides a calming oasis for its visitors.
GROWING WITH THE OLD
Architecture can be quite intrusive to the natural environment flourishing on the site. In Raga Svara, all the decision-makers and stakeholders of the project were determined to retain the natural bounty and rich vegetation to all its extent. Sandip Patil, the landscape architect, accurately describes the concluding layout — the complex comes off not as organised. This has been done in favour of upholding the mystery of the old and existing features.
The primary goal of this project was to delve into the vast array of plant species that are found in the arid and dry region of Rajkot. With a strategic approach, the existing plant life was bolstered and new species were carefully selected and added to the mix. The result is a stunning transformation of the site into a flourishing microenvironment, teeming with life and vitality. The towering mature trees, standing proudly alongside their new companions, create a rich tapestry of diverse foliage that is expected to coexist harmoniously for years to come. This careful balance of old and new creates a sense of timelessness and natural harmony that enhances the beauty of the site and provides an inviting and serene environment for visitors to enjoy.
WORK OF ART
At Raga Svara, the campus is a veritable treasure trove of tactile art, with each piece thoughtfully selected to inspire moments of contemplation and reflection. From intricate block prints and breathtaking art from the Bahi books to beautifully engraved mandalas on the slabs — the collection of art on display is both varied and impressive.
The campus architecture is purposefully kept simple, allowing the artwork to take up the centre stage and provide a captivating visual experience for the wellness centre’s visitors. With a subtle and unobtrusive backdrop, the artwork is able to truly shine and create an immersive environment that fosters a sense of peace and tranquillity. The overall effect is one of quiet beauty and understated elegance, an ideal setting for those seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
WHAT’S BUILT
The Raga Svara campus is a breathtaking wellness centre comprising several thoughtfully designed spaces. The amenity centre lies at the heart of the campus and is composed of a yoga centre, library, restaurant, and pool. The three pre-existing trees on the site guided the design of the space, with one tree serving as the focal point at the entry. Visitors are greeted by a serene view of the pool and indoor and semi-outdoor dining areas beyond.
The treatment centre is located towards the rear of the campus, providing a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere for guests. The architecture of the treatment rooms is designed with spacious roofs and adorned with Mandana stone walls, contributing to the overall ambience and serenity.
A unique conical subterranean structure resembling a cave has been constructed specifically for meditation purposes. This structure features a subdued colour palette and a solitary skylight, which serves as the sole source of illumination.
The villas at Raga Svara are designed to provide guests with luxurious amenities such as private pools and deluxe bathrooms. These villas are uniquely crafted to provide a seamless connection to the surrounding environment while ensuring complete privacy.
The typical blocks of the campus incorporate both cube and circle elements, with a broad opening framing the picturesque orchards. Guests can appreciate the stunning views while taking a leisurely stroll across the circular bridge specifically designed for this purpose. The campus is adorned with tactile art, including block prints, art from the Bahi books, and engraved mandalas on the slab. The architecture of the campus is kept simple, providing an unobtrusive backdrop for the captivating artwork.
Raga Svara has been ingeniously designed to offer a serene and tranquil environment that allows guests to contemplate and reflect. The use of primitive architecture and the natural, forest-like landscape, along with the strategic placement of art installations, all work together to provide visitors with a much-needed escape from the daily grind. This haven serves as a sanctuary that transports guests to a different realm, where they can connect with nature and disconnect from the distractions of modern life. It's a place where visitors can find solace, calmness, and rejuvenation for their bodies, mind, and soul.
