FROM COMPACT TO COMFORT : A SEAMLESS TRANSITION
Nestled in a quaint and old residential neighbourhood in Pune, this row house is a renovation project. It is one of the ten row houses in this neighbourhood, sandwiched between two plots and tall buildings surrounding it. The prior home, with a cluttered space and very little light entering the house, is now transformed into a spacious open place with lots of light and ventilation, giving it a charming ambiance.
In pursuit of this vision, the walls of the former garage were deconstructed, and the resulting space was innovatively incorporated into the house as a new intervention in the form of an informal living area. This addition features a skylight, above the informal living area that not only serves as a focal point but also serves as a source of natural light. Strategically positioned under skylight that serves as the core element influencing the overall design and layout of the house, stands out as the epitome of casual comfort. This space not only embodies a relaxed atmosphere but also functions as a key attraction within the residence. Positioned to harness the natural light from above, it becomes a harmonious convergence point where inhabitants can casually gather, fostering a sense of ease and connectivity. The integration of the skylight not only dictates the spatial arrangement but also enhances the overall ambience, making the informal living seating a central and appealing feature within the house.
The ground floor now offers a multitude of inviting hangout spots, extending from the front yard to the backyard. These areas boast charming and comfortable seating arrangements, all set against an attractive black basalt flooring that creates a distinct contrast with the white marble flooring found within the house.
THE GATHERING ABODE
In addition to the outdoor gathering areas, the living room, informal living space, dining area, and the TV room (which doubles up as a guest bedroom) serve as communal spaces. This arrangement with multiple gathering spaces allows multiple groups to occupy the house simultaneously without causing chaos.
There is more to the home than just its rooms, with transition spaces like the staircase also designed to lounge or gather, which seamlessly integrates its curves with the informal living space. Constructed with micro topping concrete and adorned with a lime coat covering, the staircase doubles up as a sit-out space making it functional as well as a sculptural piece.
Every aspect of the house is crafted to enhance and facilitate its spaces where people subconsciously come together and spend time instead of being forced to do so.
BLEND OF CONCEPTS
The residence seamlessly incorporates diverse themes such as Wabi-Sabi, Moroccan, Minimalist, Traditional, and Modern. The architects have skillfully woven together these contrasting concepts, achieving a remarkable fusion. It's not often that homes employ such harmony between its elements, establishing a single form borrowed from nature itself. Remarkably, the blend of these diverse themes doesn't make the house appear disjointed; on the contrary, it actively contributes to a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing design.
In addition to the juxtaposed design concepts within the house, there is a profound connection to nature through both the front yard and backyard. The design goes beyond visual elements, incorporating the soothing sounds of rain, the gentle rustling of leaves in the wind, and the melodic chirping of birds as integral components of an entirely organic framework. Throughout this integration, the house remains impervious to fads and trends, maintaining harmony with its environment and effectively meeting the needs of its occupants.
THE CONTRASTING KITCHEN
Diverging from the house's predominant monochromatic theme, the kitchen catches attention with its vivid and daring green color, showcasing a modern and modular aesthetic that aligns with current trends. This departure from the prevalent wooden furniture in the rest of the house introduces a refreshing and contemporary ambiance. Emphasizing functionality and adaptability, the kitchen design brings a modern twist to the traditional theme woven throughout the rest of the residence.
THE COSY BEDROOM WITH A BAY WINDOW
Adhering to the consistent monochromatic palette of browns and whites, the bedroom embodies a minimalist design, incorporating a compact dressing area and a walk-in wardrobe concealed behind a sliding shutter made of battens. Featuring a bay window seating area, it serves as a cozy spot to sit and unwind while offering a view of the informal living space below through the skylight.
House Around The Skylight seamlessly integrates a variety of themes, including Wabi Sabi, Moroccan, Minimalist, Traditional, and Modern. The architects have skillfully combined these elements to create a captivating harmony that is impossible to overlook.
It's an architectural marvel where innovation and tradition coexist in perfect harmony, inviting inhabitants into a world of comfort, creativity, and connection with nature.
