VISUAL CONNECTIVITY
The spaces in the house are designed keeping in mind the importance of material connection while being visually interconnected.
One of the main sources of light is the skylight on the top floor. Cut-outs on all the floors allows the natural light coming from the skylight to light up the entire house. The cut-out not only allows the light to enter every space, but provides the user with a visual connection with the outdoors through the cut-out. Apart from that, the design and placement of the staircase is such that it allows the user to interact with the people in the living area, making one feel like they are part of the space.
PLAY OF FORMAL AND INFORMAL SPACES
The home has a clear demarcation of formal and informal spaces on the ground floor. Dividing the space into two, it has a small bar that acts as a transition area in between, connecting the two zones.
Designed particularly for the family, the first floor is the most private zone in the home as it has the bedrooms and a private living space. In contrast to the floor beneath, the second floor, just as the ground floor, is public in nature, as it houses a party area.
NATURAL MATERIAL PALETTE
As the name ‘The Earth and Wind’ suggests, most of the materials used in the home are natural. Playing and experimenting with materials throughout the process, new combinations have been successfully explored. Resulting in a new aesthetic for the home.
Architect Priti Tatiya unfolds the unusual material combination used in the staircase, “The wood is introduced to break the monotony of the kota stone on the steps”. This brings an uplifted appearance to the area.
Throughout the home, the materials have been played with, dynamically. For example; the design uses wood in various ways in the floor, wall and roof. Just like wood, brick has been laid out in the floor and on the wall. This home is an amalgamation of earthy materials, making it unique in its own ways.
EXTERIOR VS INTERIOR
At first glance, the exterior of the home appears to have clean lines, sharp edges, and minimal material variation. With a single colour use, the initial impression of the home is minimal. But as one enters the home, the internal spaces have distinct aesthetics to that of the exterior.
The interiors of the home are a blend of countryside and colonial style. Enhancing the elements like an arched opening, rubble stone masonry, wooden panelling and Georgian windows, the house perfectly balances the use of various materials.
The materials have also been combined for a new look. Roughness of kota stone with polished wood, aesthetics of wainscot panelling with rawness of brick cladding, sandstone with the natural feeling quartzite quadro finish flooring, are a few examples. Even though it has contrasting exteriors and interiors, the home is a warm welcoming space.
The design of the home depicts an accurate balance between the built and open spaces. Taking into consideration the site’s attributes, the house has been precisely created with an inward looking arrangement. The final outcome is a stunning house that blends its form and function in an organic way.
The home is an immersive experience that celebrates the beauty of nature through the use of natural material palette. It welcomes you with the warmth of wood making you a part of its own.
