Amidst this exploration, certain projects, ideas, and narratives lingered long after the dust settled. Mud Showcase House, Greater Noida, Studio Shunya

Built on a site enclosed by the dramatic and otherwise loud skyline of Greater Noida, the house stands out from its chaotic landscape with its anchored yet diversified material palette - primarily mud.

Ar Shreya Srivastava's journey unfolds within the walls of her exceptional home and workplace. The magic lies in its inward-opening courtyard and lush garden, which provide a quiet refuge from the bustle outside.

The earthy sensation beneath your feet, soothing lime plaster that lines the walls, and the soft, dreamlike glow of diffused light filtering through bamboo shades in the courtyard create an atmosphere of peace, inviting all who enter to slow down and take in the beauty of simplicity.

Brick Veedu, Madurai, Onebulb Architecture

Inspired by the timeless principles of Laurie Baker, Brick Veedu in Madurai doesn't merely use bricks, it allows the otherwise plebeian material to take the spotlight in shaping the soul of the home it builds.

With every brick, the house tells a story—one of material honesty and thoughtful design. Here, natural light floods the spacious interiors, bathing every corner in warmth, while the innovative use of stack effect ventilation ensures that comfort never takes a backseat.  A serene Mexican dome atop the staircase landing, offers a quiet place for reflection adding a hint of touch of elegance while the material palette -  brick, stone, wood, and Athangudi tiles, although basic,  weave a functional yet stunning looking abode that fosters a sense of warmth and timelessness throughout.

Terra, Zharwad, Design Jatra

Nestled beside the tranquil Vaitarna Lake in Zharwad, Nashik, stands Terra, a holiday sanctuary that embodies the perfect balance between community and nature. Born from the solitude of the COVID-19 lockdown, Terra challenges the very concept of isolation. It is a place where connections blossomed—connections with the land, with the local artisans, and with the client couple, both doctors with a passion for the outdoors.

The house’s walls, crafted from a blend of mud, cob, and stone and the lime-plastered walls testify to timeless craftsmanship, while the local basalt stone retention walls anchor the structure firmly to the land, grounding it in its place. The lime concrete, fortified with bamboo, ensures the enduring strength of the house for generations to come.

This is architecture in its purest form, a testament to the beauty of community-driven design.

Kalpataru, Bengaluru, Design Harmony

Far from the humdrum corporate Bengaluru, this home stands as a testament to the quest for tranquility. Crafted with a deep reverence for organic beauty, Kalpataru is a celebration of simplicity and natural grace. Its open floor plan, bathed in light, stretches beneath a majestic timbrel vault, made entirely from earthy terracotta tiles, free from the cold grip of steel and cement. At the heart of the home lies a central courtyard, where daily life unfolds. But it is the stone moon arch that captures the soul of the home— a gateway that invites contemplation and peace.

Built from CSEB earth blocks, embodying a commitment to sustainable living, the  structure itself is an ode to nature’s bounty, where each element is woven together to create a seamless experience of warmth and harmony much like the studio’s name and philosophy.

Chola, Palakkad, ART on Architecture

Tucked away in the tranquil outskirts of Kerala, Chola lives up to its name, offering shade and shelter like a timeless sanctuary.

A masterful fusion of traditional Kerala architecture and contemporary design, Chola’s spaces are crafted to invite the outdoors in and vice versa. Expansive living areas catch the cool, refreshing breeze, while outdoor dining spaces bring you face-to-face with the beauty of nature. Each room within is a retreat—a place where peace reigns, offering a serene environment to relax and unwind.

The materials chosen for Chola imbue the home with warmth and character. The rough-hewn laterite walls lend a rustic, earthy charm, while the intricately carved wooden details pay homage to Kerala’s rich heritage. A quiet pond, tucked away in the landscape, adds to the sanctuary's repose, transforming the home into an oasis where nature’s loving embrace surrounds you, soothing both body and soul.

House with Three Courtyards, Anand, Hiren Patel Architects

This luxury residence effortlessly blends modern comforts with the serene beauty of nature, its distinctive sloping roofs harmonizing with the rolling landscape around it. The design weaves together traditional charm and contemporary elegance, where marble floors speak of sophistication, wooden rafters bring in warmth, and mosaic accents add a touch of refined craftsmanship.

Built with a multi-generational family in mind, the home offers seven identical bedrooms, ensuring a sense of comfort and equality for all its inhabitants.

Three central courtyards, each cradling a majestic mango tree, invite natural light and ventilation into the home, offering views that deepen the connection with the outdoors. The landscape design mirrors the beauty of the wilderness, with gardens that evoke the untamed charm of nature, adorned with vibrant plants and sculpted lawns.

Maze House, Ahmedabad, MISA Architects

This house draws inspiration from the timeless Maratha Wada, crafted as a labyrinth that beckons exploration. The design plays with the boundaries between the built and unbuilt, inviting curiosity at every turn. It reveals itself through a hidden entry, with stairs that might just lead you back to where you started.

Like a grand haveli, the house features expansive courtyards, airy rooms, and gathering spaces, yet retains an intimate warmth. The playfulness of the design shines through in the way level differences, courtyards, and verandas weave a natural flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

This house is a celebration of the "Indian" way of life, an exploration of the invisible and visible connections between people, architecture, and nature. The design is a sensory journey, responding to intuition, memories, and the human need for discovery.

Maya, Bengaluru, Kamat & Rozario Architecture

Crafted for a family of four and their cherished dogs, Maya is a perfect blend of modern aesthetics and tranquil comforts—a sanctuary that encourages both connection and calm.

At the heart of Maya House lies its central courtyard. This verdant space is more than just a visual delight; it is a living entity that breathes life into the home, infusing every room with a refreshing sense of peace and inspiration. Throughout the house, the integration of green spaces fosters an atmosphere that nurtures both relaxation and creativity, where every corner feels connected to nature. With lustrous accents of red, Maya is a bold take on contemporary living.

The façade is clad in Sadarhalli stone, a local material renowned for its smooth texture and timeless beauty. This choice not only honors the architectural traditions of the region but also ensures sustainability, offering a durable, long-lasting finish that endures through the years.

Dhajji, Naggar, NORTH

Nestled in the shadow of the majestic Himalayas, Ar Rahul Bhushan, the visionary behind North, runs a studio committed to reviving and advancing the rich cultural tapestry of Himachal Pradesh through his architectural and design expertise.

Born from the crucible of the pandemic's trials, Dhajji Cabin is a testament to his creative spirit, seamlessly merging the old with the new. It stands as a dignified tribute to Himachal’s time-honored building methods, while confidently stepping into the future. Crafted entirely from locally sourced materials, the cabin integrates flawlessly with Naggar's lush landscapes and marks a renaissance in contextual architecture, celebrating the region's heritage unabashedly.

Zooongash, Srinagar, Ar Zoya Khan

Ar Zoya Khan’s  learnings have coalesced into her sanctuary, Zooongash (meaning moonlight), a studio where the very soul of Kashmir is translated into architecture, poetry, and art.

The very heart of Zooongash reflects the textured soul of Downtown Srinagar—a chaotic yet harmonious mosaic of history, culture, and craftsmanship. Here, the walls, floors, and ceilings are not mere structures; they are a living collage, a brilliant mood board of Kashmir’s myriad hues. Every corner hums with the echoes of the valley, from the revival of dying crafts to the honoring of traditions that still breathe through the hands of artisans.

What might appear at first as a visual feast is, in essence, a deeper meditation on the Kashmiri architecture. Zoya’s work is a conscious attempt to weave these threads into a narrative, to ensure that the wisdom, beauty, and timelessness of Kashmir’s architecture are passed down to future generations. It is a quiet rebellion against the encroaching menaces of modernity, a love letter to yore, and a refusal to let the region’s unique legacy fade into dust.
